Professor Manuel Fernández-Götz, Abercromby Chair of Archaeology, has been elected as a new member of the prestigious Academia Europaea.

The Academia Europaea is a pan-European Academy of Humanities, Letters, Law, and Sciences, founded in 1988 on the initiative of the UK's Royal Society and other National Academies in Europe. It is the only Academy with individual membership from the Council of Europe states and from other nations across the world. The members are eminent, individual scientists and scholars, who cover the full range of academic disciplines (www.ae-info.org).

Sustained academic excellence

Professor Manuel Fernández-Götz said: “It is a great honour to be recognised by colleagues through election to the Academia Europaea. I am very grateful to my family, colleagues, and students for their continuous support, encouragement, and inspiration over the years. I look forward to the new networks and opportunities that the Academia Europaea will allow me to develop”.

For election to the Academia scholars must exhibit ‘sustained academic excellence in the candidate’s field’. Membership is highly competitive and follows a rigorous peer review selection process.
