The Research Excellence Framework (REF) exists to make sure world-class, dynamic and relevant research is being carried out across UK higher education. School of History, Classics and Archaeology – A shared interest in the analysis of the human past We are delighted to celebrate the wonderful Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) results. Our School has a distinctive shared interest in the analysis of the human past and the results are a reflection of the strength of our research across the three disciplines of History, Classics and Archaeology. Our research has a global reach and covers a broad range of periods, themes, and places in History. Our Classicists cover language, literature, archaeology visual art, and ancient history. And our Archaeologists research from prehistory to the present day, working on fieldwork, laboratory, and community projects. We have been successful in winning competitive research funding from Scottish, UK, European and international bodies to support our work across all three disciplines. The REF provides one very important indicator of the strength, reach, and power of our research and we are delighted that History and Classics are in the top five in the UK for breadth and quality of research (THE Research Power rank: History, Classics).
