Our Subject Areas

The School is made up of three subject areas - History, Classics and Archaeology.

History has been taught at the University of Edinburgh since its foundation in 1583. Its teaching here is internationally renowned for the breadth and depth of staff knowledge and research interests.

Classics at Edinburgh studies the ancient Greek and Roman world and its lasting significance for our current world. Classics has been taught at Edinburgh, the Athens of the North, ever since the University was founded in 1583. Our uniquely designed programmes offer a comprehensive take on the ancient world and its reception; our team of over 40 classicists engages in world-leading research and offers exceptional, research-led teaching.

Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh explores our human past to address current and future challenges. Combining the humanities and sciences in a world-leading research environment, we engage in internationally-recognised research and offer exceptional teaching and training from the heart of Scotland’s capital.
