Dr Rochelle Rowe-Wiseman has been announced as Lecturer in Black British History within the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Image The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Rochelle Rowe-Wiseman as Lecturer in Black British History. Dr Rowe-Wiseman is a historian of race, gender and the body, focusing on the Caribbean and Britain in particular. Her first book, “Imagining Caribbean Womanhood: race, nation and beauty competitions 1929 -1970” (Manchester University Press), tells a feminist history of beauty in the Caribbean spanning the British West Indies, Harlem and post-war London. Dr Rowe-Wiseman said, “Currently, I am exploring the lives of black women in nineteenth century Britain: how they were drawn into discourses of beauty and used as markers of difference. In addition to researching and teaching History I've a background in Researcher Development and have worked at Essex, Exeter and London Universities, and I come to Edinburgh from UCL. I am also involved in historical consultancy work for TV and enjoy guesting on podcasts. ‘I am delighted to be joining the History department as Lecturer in Black British History.
