Image The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Rochelle Rowe-Wiseman as Lecturer in Black British History. Dr Rowe-Wiseman is a historian of race, gender and the body, focusing on the Caribbean and Britain in particular. Her first book, “Imagining Caribbean Womanhood: race, nation and beauty competitions 1929 -1970” (Manchester University Press), tells a feminist history of beauty in the Caribbean spanning the British West Indies, Harlem and post-war London. Dr Rowe-Wiseman said, “Currently, I am exploring the lives of black women in nineteenth century Britain: how they were drawn into discourses of beauty and used as markers of difference. In addition to researching and teaching History I've a background in Researcher Development and have worked at Essex, Exeter and London Universities, and I come to Edinburgh from UCL. I am also involved in historical consultancy work for TV and enjoy guesting on podcasts. ‘I am delighted to be joining the History department as Lecturer in Black British History. I am massively looking forward to contributing to the academic and cultural life of the department and wider community.” The School extends a very warm welcome to Rochelle!
