Our buzzing modern Classics department is the result of many years of tradition and innovation. Introducing Classics at Edinburgh Introduction and welcome from our Head of Classics, Postgraduate Director and Undergraduate Advisor. Classical tradition at Edinburgh Classical languages have been taught and studied at the University since its foundation in 1583. Classics today At the beginning of the 21st century, Classics at Edinburgh is not only alive and well but is flourishing, with buoyant student numbers, new approaches to the study of the various classical disciplines, and a combination of ‘traditional’ language-based courses and those which illustrate new emphases and new directions. Edinburgh Classics Outreach Classics should be for everyone. We are keen to break down the barriers to entry into Classics, and to share our passion for the subject with learners from all backgrounds. We want to see more Classics in Scottish schools, and we support organisations that are pushing for change. The A. G. Leventis Foundation and Classics at Edinburgh The A. G. Leventis Foundation generously funds a biennial visiting professorship in Greek based within Classics at the University of Edinburgh as well as a major international conference held in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology.
