Obituary: Professor Ken Fowler

We were saddened to hear of the death of former colleague Professor Ken Fowler on 18 December 2022.

Professor Fowler was a historian of medieval Europe, whose research focused in particular on mercenaries and the Hundred Years War.

Professor Fowler was appointed to a Lectureship in History at the University in 1958, promoted to Reader in 1971 and Professor in 1974. He served as Chair of the Department of  History on two occasions, and was Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1980 to 1983. He retired from full-time teaching in 1988, but continued to teach until 1991, and as a PhD supervisor until 1996.
