The number of History staff at Edinburgh ranked world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research and Assessment Exercise, in 2008, was the highest of any university in Scotland and the third highest in the UK, an achievement exceeded only by Oxford and Cambridge. The panel reported that in Research Environment,"the majority of the activity was outstanding, the rest excellent". Esteem Indicators "were found overall to be outstanding", giving a joint overall score of 4* (or world leading) in these categories.
