The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Sonia Tycko as Lecturer in the History of Labour. Image Dr Tycko is a historian of early modern England and the Atlantic world, with a focus on social, economic, and legal history. She received her BA from Columbia University and her PhD from Harvard University and will come to Edinburgh from a junior research fellowship at the University of Oxford. Dr Tycko is currently completing her first book manuscript, ‘Captured consent: Free choice and coerced labour in the 17th century English Atlantic world’. The book argues that early modern masters used the concept of freedom as an instrument of coercion in transatlantic indentured servitude, parish apprenticeship, military impressment, and prisoner of war conscription. Dr Tycko has published related research in 'Past and Present' and 'Early American Studies'. Dr Tycko said: "In the year ahead I’m looking forward to investigating coercion and freedom in forms of labour around the Atlantic world with students and colleagues at Edinburgh. I’m very excited to meet everyone soon!" The School extends a very warm welcome to Sonia. This article was published on 2024-08-01
