HTML Image Ian Ralston, Emeritus Abercromby Professor of Archaeology and former Head of School, is the new President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Founded in 1780, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland is the senior antiquarian body of Scotland, with its headquarters in the National Museum in Edinburgh. The Society, which has thousands of Fellows spread across the globe, has the aim of promoting the cultural heritage of Scotland. Among its many activities are the organisation of the prestigious Rhind Lectures and the publication of the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Professor Ralston said: “I am very honoured to have been elected President of the Society – just over fifty years since my mentor, Professor Stuart Piggott, its then President, put my name forward for fellowship. These are challenging times for learned societies and I look forward to playing my part in keeping this 240-year-old in vigorous good health”. The School sends its warmest congratulations to Professor Ralston.
