Visiting Scholars Scheme

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to welcome visiting scholars.

Academics, scholars and researchers may apply to visit the School for a period of 1 to 12 months, whether for a short research visit or for an extended stay during sabbatical leave from their own universities or employers. The applicant should have a specific research reason to be in Edinburgh, either because of materials available in the University library or elsewhere in the city, or because of a research link with a current member of the School’s staff.

Applications are welcome from scholars in any field of History, Classics and Archaeology although preference may be given to applicants whose research is related to expertise in the School. Scholars may be at all stages of their academic careers, including early career researchers and more senior staff. Students wishing to visit Edinburgh, however, should apply through the Visiting Research Students Programme (see below).

The Director of this scheme is Professor Robert Mason, the International Director.

Below you will find information and further links, but for general enquiries regarding the Visiting Scholars Scheme please contact the School Research, Knowledge Exchange and Impact Office (RKEIO).

Individuals wishing to be considered as a Visiting Scholar must have the agreement of a current academic member of staff within the School to act as their academic sponsor for the duration of their time at the School.

Applicants should make contact with their sponsor by email to arrange this before making the formal application. A support statement by the academic sponsor is required as part of the consideration process for each application.

Applications are considered by the School's International Committee (consisting of the International Director and Subject Area representatives). The Committee considers applications with regard to the appropriate academic standard and determine if the academic purpose of the visit is relevant to the School’s areas of expertise.

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. However please note that we generally cannot consider applications received more than 12 months in advance of a proposed visit. If you need to apply earlier, for example due to funding requirements, please contact the Research Office for advice before submitting an application.

Applicants should complete the form below and return it to the School Research, Knowledge Exchange and Impact Office (RKEIO) by e-mail, hca-research@ed.ac.uk.

The fee structure is £150 per calendar month, which is used as a contribution to cover the administrative overheads of the visit. There is the possibility for visitors to request a fee waiver in some instances, for example, if they are from the Least Developed Countries, Other Low Income Countries and Lower Middle Income Countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients. In exceptional circumstances, other visitors not receiving funding for their stay may be considered for a fee reduction

Please note that applicants, if required, must be able to meet the UK Border Agency's eligibility criteria for an Academic Visitor visa.
