Taught for over a hundred years at the University of Edinburgh, the modern-day Archaeology Subject Area covers a wide range of techniques and aims to prepare students for professional roles in the field.

Archaeology at Edinburgh

Prehistoric archaeology was initially taught at Edinburgh over a hundred years ago, and in 1927 Gordon Childe became the first professor of the subject. Today Archaeology has a dozen teaching staff, with a wide portfolio of interests.

The research interests of our staff cover aspects of prehistory, early civilizations, classical archaeology, Byzantine archaeology, bioarchaeology and experimental archaeology.

Archaeology is a close-knit community with access to excellent facilities including labs and artefact teaching collections.
