From Plato to marketing: How a degree in Classics shaped my career - Nicoletta

Classics graduate Nicoletta from Cyprus tells her story on how she went from a Master’s degree in Classics to a successful career in corporate communications and marketing at 'EY'. A foundation in ancient studies has enriched her strategic thinking and communication skills, proving a key to diverse roles in the modern corporate world.

Why Classics?

My decision to study Classics was rooted in my deep fascination with ancient philosophies and cultures. While my career path has since shifted towards marketing, the critical thinking, analytical, and communicative skills honed during my studies have been invaluable in my professional life.

I chose the University of Edinburgh for its inspiring environment, prestigious reputation, and outstanding Classics department. The decision to pursue my education here was driven by my desire to learn from the best, within a city rich in history and intellectual stimulation.

One of my most cherished memories at the University was my graduation—the culmination of hard work and dedication. I also fondly remember the stimulating summer study sessions and the beautiful friendships forged, which remain significant to this day.

My Journey Post-Graduation

Post-graduation, my career began as a Client Events Officer at IMH in Cyprus, where I managed corporate client events. This role laid the foundation for my skills in organization and client communication. I then moved to Webarts Agency, leading projects in podcasts, corporate social responsibility, and marketing strategies. These experiences prepared me for my current role at EY Cyprus, where I oversee media relations, sponsorships, and event management.

The University of Edinburgh was instrumental in developing my analytical and critical thinking skills, which are crucial in my strategy formulation at EY.

The challenging yet supportive environment at Edinburgh taught me to manage stress and deadlines, a daily requirement in the fast-paced field of corporate communications.

From Classics to Marketing - or why the Humanities matter

Studying in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, particularly Classics, enriched my understanding of human culture and history, broadening my perspective and enhancing my strategic decision-making in a global corporate environment.

To all future students in the School of History, Classics, and Archaeology, I say: seize every opportunity. Engage deeply with the rich resources and the diverse intellectual community. Embrace the rigorous academic challenges; they will build your resilience and form a comprehensive worldview.

Reflecting on my journey, the blend of ancient wisdom and contemporary application has shaped a rewarding career in ways I had never anticipated. The University of Edinburgh was more than just an institution for learning; it was a gateway to lifelong skills and cherished memories. To any aspiring student, I recommend embracing both the challenges and opportunities it presents, as it did for me.
