Forty promising researchers have been named as 2024 Chancellor’s Fellows, and will be supported in progressing their research across health and care, environmental sustainability, data, digital and AI, and more.

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce Dr Jonathan Gardner as Chancellor's Fellow.

Dr Gardner said, "As Chancellor’s Fellow, I will conduct research on how the mining and use of hydrocarbons in Scotland (coal, oil shale, oil and gas) over the last 250 years can be examined as form of contested cultural heritage. As ancient materials of the past that were initially eagerly sought out, the value of such substances and their present-day extraction are increasingly questioned in the face of a future dominated by fossil-fuelled climate breakdown. Bringing recent theorisations from the energy humanities into conversation with contemporary archaeology and heritage studies, this innovative project will show how Scotland’s long-standing relationship to hydrocarbon materials is inextricable from its current landscape, built environment and socio-political situation."

Chancellor’s Fellowships, which have been awarded at the University since 2014, aim to enable rising academics to progress their careers and to carry out pioneering work.

The appointments have been enabled through an increase in the University’s Scottish Funding Council, following the University’s strong REF2021 results.
