Staff from the School of History, Classics and Archaeology have joined with colleagues at National Museums Scotland to mark the end of a successful 4-year research project. (Published 22 June 2016) HTML Since 2012, Dr Wendy Ugolini, Associate Director of the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies, has been working with David Forsyth, Principal Curator, Scottish History and Archaeology of National Museums Scotland on a research project addressing the phenomenon of 'military Scottishness' overseas. The project was funded by the Scottish Government and administered by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Between the 1820s and 1914 over two million people emigrated from Scotland, settling primarily in North America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. One of the most distinctive ways in which the influence of the Scottish diaspora in the dominions and overseas territories expressed itself was the formation of military units which adhered to outwardly Scottish regimental forms. An international workshop was held at the outset of the project with academics and museum curators from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa participating. The project culminated in the publication of the book, A Global Force. War, Identities and Scotland's Diaspora (Edinburgh University Press, 2016) which focuses particularly on the impact of the First World War on global Scottish military identities.
