A new edition of 'Cicero: Orations', edited by Dr Dominic Berry, has been published by the Folio Society this month.

The Companion to Thomas Jefferson is a collection of essays on the various aspects of Jefferson's life, edited by Prof Frank Cogliano due to be published in early 2012.

Dr Paul Quigley, lecturer in American History, has recently completed his book on nationalism and identity in the American South before and during the Civil War.

November sees the publication by Prof Tom Devine of a new work on the global Scottish diaspora and, as co-editor, a volume on Scotland's influence within the British Empire.

Dr Wendy Ugolini, Lecturer in British History, has recently published a book addressing anti-Italianism in Britain during the Second World War.

Dr. Gordon Pentland, Senior Lecturer in History, has been made a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland.

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted that our Professor Timothy D. Barnes, Honorary Professorial Fellow in Divinity and HCA, has been elected a Fellow of the British Academy.

‘Colouring the Nation' is a three-year collaborative research project directed by Dr Stana Nenadic of the University of Edinburgh.

Alvin Jackson, the Head of School, has just published his new book, 'The Two Unions: Ireland, Scotland and the Survival of the United Kingdom, 1707-2007', with Oxford University Press.

To the Ends of the Earth : Scotland's Global Diaspora 1750-2010 (Allen Lane, The Penguin Press, 2011) by Professor Tom Devine was named a Book of the Year 2011 in the Spectator, Economist, The Herald and Scotland on Sunday.

The 2011 ESHSS Research Essay Prize Proxime Accessit winner is Kirsten Elliott of the University of Edinburgh, with an essay on 'Birth control clinics in Scotland, 1926-c.1939'. Kirsten successfully completed our MSc Gender History in 2011.

The School would like to congratulate Aaron Allen (an honorary postdoctoral fellow with us) who has won the prestigious David Berry Prize for 2011 for his article 'Conquering the Suburbs: Politics and Work in Early Modern Edinburgh', 'Journal of Urban History'.
