The missing ring: First urban experience in the wetlands south of the Alps

In the first millennium BCE archaeological evidence across Europe show the formation of new centralized sites, along with new social structures and large-scale trade. For a better comprehension of this ‘urban’ revolution a link is missing though – the role of northern Italy, for its crossroad position between the Mediterranean world and temperate Europe.

Moreover, in the wetlands of the Northern Adriatic coast, urban settlements of regular layouts were built with ‘traditional’ architectural solutions and techniques, including log constructions, timber framing and water canals.
