Research at HCA

Our academic staff - as well emeritus and honorary fellows - are all experts in their own research fields. The School offers a diverse and energetic research culture grounded in a tradition of excellence that dates back to the late-19^th century. We cover a wide variety of periods, geographical places, themes and approaches, from prehistory to the contemporary world. Whilst retaining the traditional strengths of our three subjects of Archaeology, Classics and History, the School cultivates new synergies and inter-disciplinary collaborations that bring together dynamic groups of experienced academics, early career and postdoctoral researchers, and postgraduates.

External associations

Members of the School have been elected to a range of learned societies, including the British Academy, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. They have been active in the work of these bodies, and in that of other professional and funding organisations, including the AHRC, the Classical Association, the Royal Historical Society and the Historical Association. Many members of the School have strong public roles in promoting their discipline: these range from work on government committees through to media consultancy resulting in the scholarship of School members being recognised through a wide range of external funding, awards and prizes.

Graduate research

The School lays great emphasis on the importance of postgraduates as part of its wider research community, with an established range of taught masters and research programmes, and has developed a postgraduate centre. Bursaries have been established to promote postgraduate study within the School. The postgraduate community is currently around 350 strong, with growing annual recruitment.
