Professor Tom Devine to give Adam Smith Lecture

His topic will be ‘Adam Smith’s Scotland’.

Adam Smith was a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. His book, ‘The Wealth of Nations’, is a classic text of modern economics.

Distinguished history

In previous years the Adam Smith lecture has been given by Kofi Annan, former General Secretary of the United Nations, James Wolfenson, President of the World Bank, Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, Amartya Sen, winner of a Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and Gordon Brown MP, our former Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown - now United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education - is an alumnus of our University, where he gained his MA and doctorate in History

Reputation and ability

Speaking recently in ‘Fife Today’, Gordon Brown said:

“Professor Devine is one of the great historians in Scotland and will be much welcomed as someone who has got a great reputation for his ability to talk about Scotland’s history.

“We are delighted that someone as prestigious as Professor Devine has been prepared to accept our invitation to speak.”
