Inaugural Lecture: Professor David Silkenat

“Two detectives against the Klan: Or, the American fight against white supremacy during reconstruction and after”

The Civil War, the deadliest war in American history, brought an end to chattel slavery in the United States. In its aftermath, however, some former Confederates sought to maintain white supremacy through violence and terror. Professor David Silkenat's Inaugural Lecture examines the lives of several now almost entirely forgotten Americans who fought against the Klan and other white supremacist terrorist groups in the hopes of creating a biracial republic and to make the promise of emancipation meaningful.
