Synopsis

War, conflict and civil strife are difficult memories for a community to come to terms with. At the end of the fifth century the Athenians had lost their hegemony, their empire, had been defeated by the Spartans in a long war, and their community had been torn twice, by bloody civil strife, with their democracy overthrown.

Rethinking the past

This lecture will explore the strategies used by the Athenians to make sense of civil war and military defeat and 'restart' the democratic memory of the city after the restoration of democracy in 403.
