It examines how British scholars and public intellectuals engaged with the management of ethnic difference in multinational empires—from Britain and Austria-Hungary to the Ottoman Empire—and how regional national questions were translated for British and international audiences. The paper discusses how British scholars (historians, journalists, archaeologists, classicists) attempted to reconcile liberal democracy, nationalism, and imperial rule."
