The votes are in, and the name of the new School of History, Classics and Archaeology mascot is ...

Everyone, meet Ethelwyn!

After a public call for suggestions, and a shortlist of Una - meaning one, Unice - Greek, 'good victory', Giles - patron saint of Edinburgh and Ethelwyn - meaning 'noble friend' and the name of early graduate Ethelwyn Lemon, the popular choice was Ethelwyn.

We took our new Ethelwyn to view the display case about Ethelwyn Lemon on floor 1 of the William Robertson Wing, and they were very impressed.

Ethelwyn Lemon (MA 1897) donated nearly 1,000 volumes from her library on classical literature, ancient and modern (especially Scottish) history and palaeography to the University of Edinburgh upon her death in in 1943. A similar number of volumes of fiction and general literature were bequeathed to the Kirk o' Field College of the University Settlement. Ethelwyn was a native of Northumberland and attended Gateshead High School. As an undergraduate she served on the Executive Committee of the Student Representatives Council for 1895/96. She was a member of the Scottish History Society and in members list from 1919 and 1938, is listed as living at 35 Lauriston Place.

For more than 40 years she was a successful classical coach in Edinburgh, including among her students the families of Lord Oxford and Asquith and of the Haldanes of Cloan, and for 20 years she was an Assistant in History at the University, and acted as an Inspector for the Scottish Education Department.

Our Ethelwyn will be joining the team in the School Reception, and met with Bernard - formerly Greenification Officer in the MarComms Team - to begin their onboarding.

If you're in the William Robertson Wing, do pop into Reception to say hello to Ethelwyn, and look out for personal appearances on our social media.
