Edinburgh Festival Panel Event - Lead by our students; Scottish History, British or European 22nd August HTML Join our students at a panel debate on Monday, 22 August 2016 from 13:00 to 14:00 at Meadows Lecture Theatre - William Robertson Wing Teviot Place, University of Edinburgh Following the referendum on the UK's membership in the EU, Scotland's relationship with Europe has taken centre stage. While the UK as a whole voted to Leave, Scotland opted to Remain. But where Scotland's future role in Europe now looks uncertain, what can its past tell us? Although Scottish history has traditionally been viewed as a part of a wider ‘British’ history, some historians have argued Scotland is better understood as part of a European framework, with connections and exchanges between Scotland and the continent playing a comparatively much more important role than in England. How much do Scotland’s European ties matter when it comes to understanding its history? To what extent might these claims be based on Scottish exceptionalism and current political needs? How do they fit into an understanding of Scotland’s role within the framework of global, imperial and diaspora histories? The Scottish History Network has gathered a diverse group of experts together to help us answer these questions, including: Prof. Ewen Cameron, Panel Chair, Dr. Tanja Bueltmann, Prof. Richard Finlay, Prof. Allan MacInnes, Dr. Esther Mijers To register for the event please visit the EventBrite registration Aug 22 2016 00.00 - 00.00 Edinburgh Festival Panel Event - Lead by our students; Scottish History, British or European 22nd August Join our students and some key School lecturers at a free historic panel event to discuss Scotland and the Eu referendum.
