The School is delighted to announce that Alexandra Doménech has won the International Society for First World War Studies' President's Undergraduate Essay Prize. The inaugural International Society for First World War Studies' President's Undergraduate Essay Prize has been won by second-year History (MA Hons) student Alexandra Doménech for her essay 'Flirting with the Front: The Marraines de Guerre and the Unofficial Intimacies of the Great War'.The judges considered Alexandra's essay to be, "...extremely impressive and written in a confident and compelling style". You showcased a clear understanding of the complexities of gender in wartime. You also displayed very strong engagement with the existing literature and the judges were impressed by both your originality and your excellent understanding of the period. In short we considered it to be an exceptional piece and a wonderful example of the type of fine work produced by undergraduate students. Dr Chris Kempshall, Society President, said: "The President's Undergraduate Essay Prize is a brand new initiative from the Society. The quality of the inaugural year's submissions was incredibly high and Alexandra is a very deserved winner. We heartily recommend other undergraduate students consider submitting their work next year when the competition opens again."
