The School is very excited to announce that the leading international journal ‘Gender & History’ has moved to the University of Edinburgh. A new team of editors, all based within the History subject area, will edit the journal for the next five years, having taken over from the Sheffield University editors who acted between 2020 and 2025. The new editorial team is:Cordelia Beattie, Professor of Women’s and Gender History with a particular interest in medieval and early modern BritainDr Kate Davison, Lecturer in the History of SexualityDr Kirsty Day, Lecturer in Medieval History, specialising in histories of religion and emotion, especially in Central and Eastern EuropeDr Zubin Mistry, Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval History, with interests especially in medicine, healthcare and reproduction;Diana Paton, William Robertson Professor of History and a specialist in Caribbean historyDr Emily Ward, Lecturer in Medieval Scottish History with interests in childhood, youth and the family. The Edinburgh team was selected by the ‘Gender & History’ collective after a competitive application process earlier this year. Professor Katie Barclay, a collective member, said: ‘The team at Edinburgh brought a strong vision for the journal, a diversity of expertise to guide it, and strong institutional support for its operations. The committee thought Gender & History would flourish in this new home'.Professor Diana Paton said, ‘We are all delighted to be working with the ‘Gender & History’ collective and with the journal’s publishers, Wiley. Several of us have previously published in ‘Gender & History’, so bringing the journal to Edinburgh made a lot of sense. We are looking forward to building on the journal’s successful history over the next few years.’History, as a subject, at Edinburgh employs one of the strongest groups of historians of gender, sexuality, and women anywhere in the world. The department is home to a longstanding Histories of Gender and Sexualities research group which organises regular research events. Recent research projects in gender history include Alice Thornton’s books, led by Beattie, investigating gentry life in seventeenth-century Yorkshire from the perspective of the autobiographical narratives of Alice Thornton. Gender history, women’s history and the history of sexuality form an important part of the undergraduate and masters’ level curriculum in history, and many PhD students also work in the field.The current issue of Gender & History is available online (link below), and the journal is keen to receive submissions in all areas of gender history.
