Renewing History Masters Programmes

Information on changes to on-campus Masters (MSc) programmes within the School of History, Classics and Archaeology.

The School is home to one of the largest groups of historians in any University, and we are proud of the breadth and depth this brings to our research and teaching.

We regularly review our academic portfolio and from the 2027-28 academic year, we are bringing together our three on-campus Masters (MSc) programmes – Contemporary History, Intellectual History and Medieval History – with the MSc in History.

The refreshed MSc in History continues to offer the depth, choice and specialist study that have long been central to History at Edinburgh. Students will continue to explore a wide range of themes, periods and regions within the refreshed History MSc programme through the flexible elective course options that are a core part of Masters studies at Edinburgh. By bringing these programmes together into one larger programme we are protecting the strength of our disciplines and ensuring that the University of Edinburgh remains one of the best places in the world to study, teach and research History.
