Fairly-traded textiles in late 19th century Ireland and Scotland Professor Janice Helland, author of Craft, Community and the Material Culture of Place and Politics, 19th-20th Century will discuss the shift towards home-industry production of hand-crafted textiles in Ireland and Scotland in the 1880s. She will interrogate the concept of ‘fairly traded’ by comparing late nineteenth-century ‘beneficent’ practices with late twentieth-century alternative trade cooperatives.
