Global and Contemporary History of Palestine

The Global and Contemporary History of Palestine hub is a network of teachers and students who are engaged with the global and contemporary history of the question of justice in Palestine.

Covenors

The Global and Contemporary History of Palestine Hub convenors are Dr Hana Sleiman (Hana.Sleiman@ed.ac.uk) and Dr Jeremy Dell (jeremy.dell@ed.ac.uk).

We believe that as historians and scholars, it is incumbent upon us to educate, raise awareness, and create an inclusive space for our community to understand and historically situate recent grave events, most notably the genocide in Gaza and the ongoing violence in the region. Building on efforts to decolonise the curriculum at HCA, and on UoE's recent Race Review Report, we believe in the importance and urgency of research and learning around the question of justice in Palestine, as efforts to deconstruct power sit at the heart of our intellectual and professional vocation.

In the next academic year, our work will progress along three axes:

  • Monthly reading group on the Global and Contemporary History of Palestine.
  • Events co-organised with departments and centres across the university.

A curricular circle, in cooperation with Decolonising the Curriculum at HCA.

Reading Group

The Hub hosts a reading group in the history of Palestine that meets in person and online regularly during the academic year. Please email the hub convenors for details.

For the Academic Year 2026-2027, the Reading Group will respond to the Race Review’s invitation to view the colonisation of Palestine as constitutive of, and not separate to, British imperial history and the contemporary history of empire and colonialism. Semester 1 sessions will focus on contextual and essential readings and will begin to address the history of British Mandate Palestine with a focus on the Palestinian Revolt of 1936-1939.
