About the Centre

Established in 2008, the CMRS builds on the University of Edinburgh's long tradition of research into the medieval and renaissance periods.

The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies brings together academics and postgraduate students from various schools and departments at the University of Edinburgh, home to one of the largest communities of medieval and renaissance specialists in the world. With over 60 affiliated members of staff, it aims to promote interdisciplinary cooperation across the University through a series of events, including regular seminars during term time and the annual Denys Hay Lecture (co-organised with the Centre for Late Antique, Islamic and Byzantine Studies). The Centre also includes a large number of postgraduate members and sponsors events for postgraduate students, such as work-in-progress seminars and conferences.

The Centre was established in 2008 by staff from various schools across the University (HCA, LLC, ECA, PPLS, Law and Divinity). Originally based in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Centre is now housed in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. It is co-directed and co-funded by HCA and LLC.
